These heifers (female cows that have not yet had a calf) are part of a strategy to improve grasslands for nesting birds in the Kulm Wetland Management District in North Dakota. Cattle are rotated onto Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) at differing times of the year. Dependent on timing, intensity, and duration of the grazing, different outcomes can be worked toward. Some benefits of cattle include: Opening the canopy for new plant growth, creating varying grass heights and thicknesses for a diversity of nesting sites in an area; the ability to target or manage invasive species; and nutrient cycling.
